APARTMENT MR
At the border with the architectural ensemble of Nova Oeiras, an emblematic urban project of the 20th century, stands a collection of buildings influenced similarly, where we were tasked with rehabilitating an apartment.
The prominent presence of pillar and beam structures in the walls and ceilings guided our intervention towards a design that contained circulation areas with lower ceilings. This approach effectively resolved the apartment’s infrastructure challenges while highlighting functional spaces where the structure remains visible.
The kitchen was modernized to accommodate contemporary living, optimizing space for both passage and social interaction. It was expanded and transformed into a seamless continuation of the apartment’s circulation flow, yet designed to allow for traditional use when desired.
The project maintains a deliberate balance between contemporary intervention and the apartment’s original character, exemplified by the pine wood flooring and the nuanced differences in wall finishes. These elements, along with the spatial qualities of the kitchen, underscore the project’s commitment to integrating modern functionality with the apartment’s historical integrity.
