HOUSE | CARAMÃO
The Caramão da Ajuda neighborhood in Lisbon was built between 1940 and 1945 on the Ajuda hillside facing the Tagus River, above the Restelo neighborhood.
Alongside other social housing neighborhoods in Lisbon, such as Caselas, it was designed to represent small villages that provided a lifestyle similar to what the lower social classes, who occupied them at the time of their construction, were accustomed to.
This neighborhood is characterized by two-story terraced houses with two yards. One smaller and located at the front, while the other, at the back, represents a substantial portion of each plot.
Characterized by very small and compartmentalized spaces, the main challenge of these houses is adapting to contemporary living and the need for larger spaces with more connection to the outdoors.
The project was developed based on a principle of hierarchically organizing the house by floors. Each floor corresponds to a specific function so that the areas are utilized to the fullest, creating quality spaces. Respecting the neighborhood’s morphology and the characteristic main façade, the project adapts the existing structure into a contemporary home.
